Werlitsch

Weingut Werlitsch

Brigitte and Ewald Tscheppe wines are among the most unusual that we know of. They defy any classification in any known scheme, they do not obey any cliché, they belong to a class of their own.

We have known the Tscheppe family for more than 10 years, not in vain it is an area that we love and where we believe there is immense potential.

The trips to Styria to hang out with them, with Strohmeier, Muster, Tauss, Andreas; they are always a cure for humility.

His philosophy is clear and direct, always taking care of the process and of course the final result.

Weingut Werlitsch wines are actually so modest that they are often not recognized or run the risk of being misunderstood. They are wines that need time to be enjoyed. Time that we barely take advantage of today, as the world of wine grows louder, faster and more hectic.

Ewald Tscheppe learned the trade in his parents' business and professionalized it at the Silberberg wine school. Finally in 2004 is when he decides to take charge alone.

The vineyards cover a tiny nine hectares of vineyards near the Slovenian border and are treated with biodynamic methods. Only white varieties are grown, and the strains have an average age of 25 years. Tscheppe credibly exemplifies the respectful and sustainable management of its soils and vines.

The profile of the vineyard describes steep and arid slopes that merge

in somewhat flatter areas. This results in different microclimate zones and soil types. The flatter areas with a higher proportion of clay are very fertile. The rugged areas, on the other hand, are extremely poor and with very little land.

Brigitte and Ewald Tscheppe are as laid back as their wines. We only know a few equally courageous and uncompromising winemakers who are as inspired by their work as the two of them. They do what they are convinced. They don't care about the market around them.

In large part, they leave their wines in the cellar to nature because they trust their cultural work in the vineyard and the winery.
