Benjamin Leroux

Many speak of Benjamin Leroux, including Allen Medows, as the natural successor of Henri Jayer, among other things for his deep knowledge of the different climats he works with, for his methodical and intuitive approach when making decisions. and for its innovative nature. Benjamin, a personal friend of our founder Andrés Conde, chose his profession at the age of 15 when he entered the lycee Viticole, a kind of high school focused on oenology and viticulture. Later he learned the trade at Domaine des Comte Armand with Pascal Marchand, he also worked at Domaine Drouhin in Oregon and at Saint-Estephe in Cos d'Estournel where he remained until he returned to Domaines de Comte Armand to succeed his mentor Pascal. Upon returning to Comte, Armand Benjamin managed to certify the property in biodynamics and convinced the count to buy fruit as a negociant, especially whites, since, as Leroux himself says, "for me it is equally important to make both whites and reds." In 2007 Benjamin began to combine his work as technical director at Comte de Armand with his small business. Since 2007, Benjamin buys grapes directly and vinifies directly in a small winery in the heart of Beaune. His idea is to one day be able to have a small domaine and today he has already bought some plots in Blagny. But currently all his energy is focused on getting to know all the different terroirs where he works. He only buys fruit from vineyards that do not work with herbicides and that work sustainably. In many cases, they do not buy the fruit by the kg, but by production according to the area, thus having control over yields and work in the vineyard. In the elaboration it varies tremendously, but Leroux favors little new wood, uses large-capacity foudres combined with a deposit or barrel, depending on the wine. For the young winemaker, the most important thing is not to lose complexity and to achieve this he uses both a deposit and a foudre and for his villages he believes that fruit from different situations must be used that contribute different characteristics to the final result.

Very happy to be able to offer a small representation of their wines at Unicorn.
